Demand and Supply by alltelleringet Demand and Supply by alltelleringet
This is a photo manipulation I've been working on for the past months. All material shot by me, landscapes shot on Faroe Islands, houses shot in Stockholm and Prague. Excavator and truck is a 1:50 scale model shot in studio. Composed in Photoshop in a total of 340 layers with a total file weight of 7.77 GB (8272 x 6200 pixels). Includes no CGI, drawn elements or stock photos.

I would love to hear what you think about it, what is the first thing that comes to your mind when you see it?

I'm not sure I would be the best to write you a full critique, because to my eye, your work is so well done, I wouldn't be able to say what could be done better ;P

I follow your work since you did this one: « Go your own road » in 2009 (alltelleringet.deviantart.com/…). Your work was already so imaginative, conceptual and amazingly well done back then, you just keep getting new level-ups since then! ^_^

I believe overall, the most impressive part is that there's no stock photo; all is shot and arranged by yourself. Very impressive! Until now, you were always working in a "closer environment", this one is the first (or close to it) with such a depth in the horizon. The others used to tell a story, while this one is more a descriptive environment; this is not the story of one person, but of a whole town, a whole fantasy world! Most of the other made me fell like "peeping into the intimacy of something, or some place", while this one is wide open, a lot less "intimate", but I feel intimidated by this bold/different world. I'm right IN it, like if I was on an helicopter to get there, whether I like it or not!

And then, there's the message (like always), and it's a frighting one, very "our era issu", the idea that our over use of ressources will be our downfall. There's about no more land, and for what's left of it, they all keep "eating" it. It's a very sensible and activist message that does touch my green heart. Few of us wishes to shake people up and scream "We can't keep living the way we do, wake up! Time to change, for all our sake!" and in this way, your heart, your mind, your work, this image... are your best weapons. It comes like a slap in the face.

Incredibly strong image/message. Very well done.
Makes me feel sooooooo inconfortable!

The idea is awesome as always.
I'd try to be careful with so much photoshopped images all together, it's good for concept art but not for a photorealistic result (if that's what you want to achieve).
I'll write what I would try but before that I want you to know that I probably wouldn't be able to do half the things you do :)

The sky lens looks different by the rest, in fact the town on the island looks a bit too"isometric" compared to the rest.
there's a bloom of light in the middle-right of the terrain, that would hardly happen because the atmosphere at this distance wouldn't be so strong, the density of the air particles is not that strong.
It seems like there's a lot of dodge/burn on the houses, probably the light didn't match and you had to adjust it, but consider that light doesn't work the same way on all materials, and especially dodge gives a plastic effect, it's missing roughness.

Now these are all technical issues, mainly they can be solved by using 3D instead of photographs, or even 3D mixed with your own photo projections.

I totally love your ideas and if you manage to achieve total realism they'd kick asses even more, so I try to help with the few knowledges I have :D
Thank you for sharing these extremely cool images by the way, you really inspire me each time you post a new work!

"This is going to break and crash", was obviously the first thing that came to mind, even before I had noticed that the excavators were actively reducing the stem further.
I love all those precious little details like the birds.

The message here is very potent. I'm less of an expert on technique (actually I don't know enough to comment intelligently) but I am impressed.

This is really impressive, I'm wondering if you might know of a few tutorials on how you got the right size proportions for something ambitious as this.  I haven't yet tried to make a landscape of my own but it's on my list of things to do however I really struggle with complex composites like this one.  I would be very grateful for any insight you might have.  Thanks so much, and again amazing brilliant and impressive work!

I mainly just go on feeling when it comes to sizing different objects, but sketchup can also be helpful for digital mockups and testing placement, fairy easy to use too!

Amazing work! To me it depicts a small city that wanted to be on a flying island :p That's the job of this construction company! So nothing about earth destruction. Only dreams and magic :D

This is incredible. I want this as a poster on my wall.

The detail that you see on (what's left) of the earth around the construction equipment is great. Makes you think that you can hop on a boat and go to these islands. I see 4 of them. They aren't just copy/pasta either.

340 layers and 7.77 gigs for the PSD? Must have a monster rig to put this one together. My laptop certainly would flop over and not bother to continue.

These are the first things i thought when i saw this

"There is alot of space but only a little bit is ably to live on. Despite this companies destroy it just to make a profit and the people want to live in comfort which requires more resources and the people dont know how bad there little place is. Before they know it, theres nothing left but endless pain.

Seems a bit like whats going on in our own world just a bit exaggerated.

>what is the first thing that comes to your mind when you see it?

Pretentiousness. It looks like another alarmist piece of enviromentalist propaganda, although made with amount of skill and artistic taste usually unreachable by those types.

P.S: 7.77 GB, holy shit O_O

We use too much especially because of our population. Natural Resources come back in one way or another, but that takes too long, we really need to improve space travel so we can get resources from "dead" worlds

There's never a day where I don't think of the truth underlying this piece. We build our towers oh so high. We think ourselves grand. But, when it all comes tumbling down, there may be only ruin left where once there was a fertile land to give us life.
I've learned much of human nature the past few years. I know that we don't have to choose this. We don't have to proceed towards our own destruction. Yet, we probably will. I'm not sure people have ever lived in a sustainable way. Perhaps we've always been innate forces of destruction. It's just that before, our numbers and technology were inconsequential enough that the world could mostly recover from our actions.
Not this time though....
We're chemically altering the world at thousands of times the rate of natural processes. We rip the land bare, and in our cities, we pretend that this is normal, we pretend that things are okay....
All morality is subjective, but ..... to act in a way that destroys oneself (and much else besides) is generally not thought of as.... healthy.

Brilliant art. This is one of the best manipulations I've ever seen.
